What could be better than starting the week off with Cookies?

Carmel Oatmeal Chewies From someone at the Hair Forum, in Royal Oak

  • 1¾ cup Quaker Oats
  • 1 ½ cup flour
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt (optional)
  • ¾ cup margarine melted (1 ½ sticks)
  • 1 cup chopped nuts
  • 1 6 oz package of semisweet chocolate chips
  • 14 oz bag vanilla caramels
  • ¼ cup water

Oven 350° - grease 13 x 9, combine first 5 ingredients, add margarine and mix until crumbles. Reserve 1 cup for topping, pour remaining mixture onto bottom of pan. Bake 10 minutes, cool, top with nuts and chocolate. In saucepan, melt caramels with water over low heat. Stir until smooth. Remove from heat. Drizzle over chocolate pieces to within ¼ inch of pan edges. Sprinkle with reserved oat mixture. Continue baking 15 to 18 minutes or until light golden brown, cool, chill until chocolate is set, cut into bars. Store tightly covered in cool dry place, 32 bars.
